The scene with McCutcheon, louis and clarence provides some comic relief from the intensity of the past few pages. When McCutcheon tells clarence "its a great insult not to eat whats put before ye when y're visiting the sioux...Men have been know to lose their scalps for such an insult."
Here McCutcheon is exaggerating, but this also shows us how much differnt the white peoples and the natives lives are. They probably wouldnt actually scalp clarence but they would be offended if he didnt eat everything. They make use of everything they have, eg. using everypart of the buffalo, whereas the white people are very wasteful, eg the tub with mrs anderson,
